PERCEPTIONS 2014

Never before has a research assignment inspired me to delve into a subject so fervently as COMU 3000 Communication Research Project. Coordinated by Dr Aparna Hebbani from the School of Journalism Communication, students were invited to create groups with a specific research interest. A countrys brand is a valued commodity, especially when that nation is the worlds largest economic and strategic power. And, in 2014, Americas image remains strong in much of the world. Transparency International is the global civil society organisation leading the fight against corruption. Transparency International (TI) has published the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) since 1995, annually ranking countries by their perceived levels of corruption, as determined by expert assessments and opinion surveys. The CPI generally defines corruption as the misuse of public power for private benefit. The CPI currently ranks 176 countries on a scale from 100 (very clean) to 0. Women may have made measurable progress in the workplace over the last few decades, yet old ways die hard. Women still lag when it comes to holding top managerial positions. And among those with a preference, both men and women say they prefer a male boss and coworkers. In 2014, we started surveying news reporters covering state politics in addition to the investigative reporters covering issues related to corruption to construct perceptionbased indices measuring two specific forms of corruption across American states: illegal and legal. This years Corruption Perceptions Index highlights that the majority of countries are making little or no progress in ending corruption, while further analysis shows journalists and activists in corrupt countries risking their lives every day in an effort to speak out.
